Need
An automatic welder for nuclear fuel products with extreme quality requirements
The variety of fuels for different nuclear reactor types requires production equipment that can handle varying product shapes and sheet thicknesses.
The atmosphere during the welding process must be free from oxygen and nitrogen as these elements would otherwise be absorbed by the molten weld and degrade the material.
The TIG welding method itself requires access to electricity and shielding gas. The power source needs electricity and cooling media in the form of alcohol/water. The machine may require controlled cooling, such as a cooling coil with circulation.

Solution
A custom-built vacuum welding machine
In close collaboration with the customer, a specially developed machine has been created.
The machine is characterized by:
- Advanced fixturing
- Vacuum chamber with integrated welding and laser scanner function
- Laser profile scanner, Keyence accuracy 5µm
- Welding machine by Migatronic
- Flow and oxygen content sensors
- Control system by Siemens
- Vacuum chamber by Löwener
